λ Maurice Canning Wilks (Irish 1911-1984) Loughanure, County Donegal Oil on canvas-board Signed (lower right) 31 x 36cm (12 x 14 in.) Provenance: John Magee, Belfast Maurice Canning Wilks was an Irish landscape painter born in Belfast in 1910. Wilks attended evening classes at the Belfast College of Art before being awarded a scholarship to further his eduction by attending the day classes at the college. Inspired by the Irish landscape and in particular views by James Humbert Craig, Wilks' early landscapes captured the mood and essence of the northern and western counties including Donegal, Antrim and Kerry. Wilks exhibited at the Royal Hibernian Academy in Dublin and went on to become an associate member. His career took off internationally and he exhibited in London, Boston, Montreal and Toronto.
