Produced for twenty years, between 1937 and 1957, the Reference 533 is estimated to have been produced in only 350 pieces in yellow gold cases and a small number in pink gold by famous casemaker Emile Vichet.Like its sister, the Reference 130, which has a concave rather than a flat bezel, the Reference 533 embodies the spirit of the pure and essential lines of the round wristwatch of the Calatrava models made by Patek Philippe from the early 1930s onwards. The Calibre 13’’’ CH, the flagship of Patek Philippe chronographs, represents the excellence of the Geneva manufacture, so much so that it constituted the basis of the movement that animated the first chronograph in the world with a perpetual calendar, in this case the highly coveted Reference 1518. The watch offered in the catalogue, preserved in excellent condition, has never before appeared at auction as its current owner has jealously guarded it for forty years. Moreover, the dial is distinguished by a salmon-pink colouring with vivid and well- marked prints, insomuch as it still looks the same today as when it left the Patek Philippe atelier more than seventy years ago.
