An antique bronze Japanese lidded vase. A two handled bulbous body mounted on a stylized base plinth. Two handles with stylized allegorical bird form heads and opposing relief scenes of flora and birds resting on a central three legged bracket base with allegorical demon faces. Stylized lid with encircling open metalwork flora and a large decorative ornament finial modeled as a Japanese kirk (Chinese "qilin"), a mythical hooved creature often portrayed as unicorn-like, but with a backwards curving horn. In the Japanese hierarchy of mythological animals, the kirin is ranked as the most powerful creature, above both the dragon and phoenix. Rich patina throughout.
