Fourth-quarter 19th Century; Paris, France Marked for Maison Odiot [oil lamp] / Paris 950 silver; Further marked: Odiot a Paris / 1487 The oblong covered serving dish with rocaille foliate motifs, two reeded handles, and guilloche border surmounted by an attached lobster knob to the lid and raised on four scrolled feet, personalized 10.5" H x 19" W x 10.5" D 130.14 oz. troy approximately Provenance: Gifted to Herbert J. Yates from John Wayne, by repute. Notes: Herbert John Yates (1880-1966) was the founder and president of the Los Angeles-based motion picture production and distribution corporation Republic Pictures, which specialized in Western films. Yates maintained contracts with notable Western actors, including John Wayne, Gene Autry, and Roy Rogers.
