Description

Attributed to E.G Punnett (British), an Arts & Crafts oak and inlaid chest of drawers made by William Birch of High Wycombe c.1901 The top with raised three quarter gallery above an arrangement of eight drawers, with pewter knob handles and flanked by stylised ebony, pewter and brass inlaid flower heads, on tapered and stepped feet 125.5cm high, 115.5cm wide, 48cm deep Property from a Private London Collection. Literature: Pauline Agius, British Furniture 1880-1915, Antique Collectors’ Club, 1978, p.120, (a washstand and dressing table are illustrated with the same inlay). Pauline Agius shows some of the items that Punnett’s name appears with in the Birch design and costings books in 1901, in the months October and November, and says that it is unclear whether he designed them all or perhaps some references may have occurred because he costed them.
