Joseph Henry Sharp (American, 1859-1953) War Bonnet Maker, Oil on canvas, Signed lower right J. H. Sharp. Framed dimensions: H: 27 3/4 x W: 23 3/4 x D: 2 3/4 in. H: 20 x W: 16 1/4 in. Provenance: Collection of Pauline Werk Kleve and Arthur Kleve, Cincinnati, Ohio, acquired from Cincinnati Art Academy, Cincinnati, Ohio; By descent to the present owner. This painting comes directly from a branch of the Werk family of Cincinnati, Ohio, noted Queen City industrialists and manufacturers who emigrated from Alsace-Lorraine to found the M. Werk Company, a soap and candle empire (which was eventually sold to Procter & Gamble). Mr. and Mrs. Arthur Werk purchased this work by Joseph Sharp, an artist with strong early ties to Cincinnati, for their Cincinnati residence. Sharp taught at the city's Art Academy and was also a founding member of the Cincinnati Art Club.
