A Portugese ivory carving of St Joseph with the Christ Child, c1700, the Saint's long flowing hair and beard finely detailed, standing in sandals on a sphere, the Christ Child seated in the crook of his arm and held by his left hand, Jesus steadying himself with his right arm on the Saint's breast, the loose flowing drapery billowing in places to reveal cherubim emerging beneath the garment's hem, one carved in the round with arms upraised, 19.5cm h, marble stand Christ Child lacking left arm but no other significant loss or damage, old blackened shrinkage cracks and the ivory yellowed, mainly on the back, some accretion of old dust, on the reverse the remains of two small metal fixings in the principal figures back and also small drilled holes for the same purpose in the back of the head of the Saint and child
