Year: 17th Century Size: 120cm x 80cm Medium: Oil Description: Fine huge 17th century scene of the invasion of Lepanto by the Ottoman Empire against the Republic of Venice, oil on cavan attributed to Cornelius De Wael. Important piece or history painting capturing the invasion of the Ottomans capturing the Venetians stronghold of Lepanto (an important exclave to the Republic of Venice as a trade route through the Corinthian Gulf). Wael rarely travelled to the locations of his historical accounts nor witnessed battles firsthand. Instead his battles scene are Capriccios of the events during the Venetian-Ottomans Wars.
