ca. 1300–1500 AD. European. A solid medieval silver ring with a circular band and flared shoulders. The oval bezel is decorated with the Biblical story of the judgement of Solomon (1 Kings: 3: 16-28) according to which Solomon ruled between two women both claiming to be the mother of a child (seen upside down at the centre of the bezel) by suggesting the baby be cut in two (see the standing figure in the right-hand side of the bezel wielding a sword) so that each woman could receive half; with this strategy, he was able to discern the non-mother as the woman who entirely approved of this proposal; fully wearable condition.Provenance: Private collection of an Oxford professional, formed in the 1970s-1990s on the UK art market.Size: D: 19.85mm / US: 10 / UK: T 1/2; 11.5g
