ca. 323–300 BC. Hellenistic. A silver coin (tetradrachm) depicting Herakles in right profile on the obverse wearing the lion-head headdress symbolising the Nemean lion. The reverse of the coin shows Zeus seated on his throne holding an eagle and sceptre, behind which the legend reads A?E?AN?POY (of 'Alexander'). Alexander is Alexander III of Macedon, also known as Alexander the Great, whose dynasty (the Argeads or Temenids) purported to descend from Herakles.
