ca. 300–500 AD. Roman. A large iron spearhead with a leaf-shaped blade, raised midrib, sharpened edges tapering to a pointed tip, and long flared socket with hole for attachment to the shaft; custom-made stand included. Weapons of this type were used in the Late Roman period by both Roman soldiers and their adversaries; its large size suggests that spears were probably used alongside a shield by heavy infantry fighting in close formation.Provenance: Private Oxfordshire collection; formerly acquired on the European art market.Size: L:255mm / W:mm ; 145g
