A Chinese gilt bronze statuette of Guanyin dating from the Tang dynasty with a wooden stand. Guanyin stands on a lotus in tribhanga or contrapposto with her hip shifted to the left. She is adorned with jewelry, a crown, and a floral garland. Her left hand holds a lotus pod, and her right hand holds a basket. A halo frames her head. Dimensions are: without the stand, the statue measures 2 3/4 inches tall X 7/8 inches wide, 7 cm X 2.2 cm. Weight: 47.3 grams (with stand). All measurements are approximate. Condition: There is loss to the halo and to her right arm. There is wear to the gilt. Provenance: From the collection of Mr. Williams in Texas. Mr. Williams has more than 50 years of collecting experience in Buddhist sculptures, paintings, and ritual objects from India, Pakistan, Nepal, Tibet, and the Central Plains of China. He has participated in sales around the world including in Hong Kong and throughout Tibet and Europe. This lot was purchased from a Swiss auction. Similar, larger examples can be found in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York City under accession numbers 42.25.27a, b and 33.91.
