Montague Dawson (British, 1895-1973) Up channel Oil on canvas 20 x 30-1/4 inches (50.8 x 76.8 cm) Signed lower left: Montague Dawson Property from the Estate of Kenneth Alan Hill, Sr., Fort Worth, Texas PROVENANCE: The artist; Frost & Reed, London, acquired from the above, 1935; Private east coast collection; Vallejo Gallery, Newport Beach, California; Acquired by the present owner from the above, 2012. Based on its shape and sails, the ship depicted in Montague Dawson's Up channel is believed to represent the Oberon. Marine historian Michael Naxton, ASFAV, notes the Oberon was a successful ship in the 'Wool Fleet' – an affectionate name for ships that worked in the Australian wool trade. Her fastest passage was Melbourne to London in 77 days when, after leaving Australian waters on November 15, 1874, she docked in London on January 31, 1875, the fastest time of the season.
