Rembrandt van Rijn (Dutch, 1606-1669) Christ before Pilate: large plate, 1635 Etching with engraving on paper 21-1/2 x 17-5/8 inches (54.6 x 44.8 cm) (sheet, trimmed to the platemark) Signed and dated in the plate, lower left: Rembrandt New Hollstein's fourth state (of five) Property from the Estate of Kenneth Alan Hill, Sr., Fort Worth, Texas PROVENANCE: Galerie Michael, Beverly Hills, California. LITERATURE: New Hollstein, 155. In this very good impression of the other large plate from his early career as a printmaker (see Descent from the Cross: Second plate), Rembrandt combined the Presentation of Christ to the people by Pontius Pilate and the Mocking of Christ by the people of Jerusalem into an expansive and deeply moving image. Although surrounded by the Pharisees and mocking onlookers, Christ radiates peace as he looks to the heavens, his hands clasped in prayer. To Christ's right, in the crowd along the balcony, Rembrandt included his self-portrait. Engraver Jan van Vliet collaborated with Rembrandt on this plate. This lot is accompanied by a certificate of authenticity from Galerie Michael. HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
