He joined the Navy at 17 and served as a radio operator during World War II. After being discharged he attended Minneapolis School of Art and Design. Post-graduation he moved up to Duluth where he worked for Marshall and Associates Advertising Agency and soon ventured out on his own as a self-employed graphic artist. In 1955 he won the Federal Duck Stamp competition. He was active for many years in the Fredenberg Chapel serving in various capacities.
