BIOGRAPHY: Frederic de Hahnen is a Dutch-born French painter and illustrator, especially known for his realistic sketches.Frederic de Hanen traveled a lot, visiting in particular Central Africa and Russia. For more than 30 years in Paris, he directed the magazine "L'Illustration" (1888-1923). In 1908 he moved to Great Britain, where until 1918 he worked as a correspondent in Africa for The Graphic magazine. He also collaborated with The Illustrated London News.After World War I, Hanen returned to France and settled on the Breton island of Brea, where he built a small quaint castle "Krec'h Gwen" (from Breton "White Land"). Here he lived until the end of his days, painted many scenes from what he had seen before. Buried at the local cemetery.
