George Katsutoshi Nakashima (American, 1905-1990). 20th century carved walnut and rosewood table lamp with paper shade. George Nakashima was a renowned architect, furniture maker, and woodworker in the 20th century and a father of the American craft movement. He was born in 1905 in Spokane, Washington, where the surrounding landscape instilled in him a great love of nature. Although he completed a Master's degree and initially pursued a career in architecture, he quickly became disillusioned by the industrialization of the practice, and instead turned to furniture design. Each piece he created was unique and embraced flaws in the wood as something that should be celebrated. Height: 19 1/4 in x diameter: 9 5/8 in.
