Bahubali, also known as Gomateshvara, is said to have been the first Tirthankara and thus the founder of Jainism. He is depicted standing naked, in the Digambara fashion, indicating his renunciation of earthly things. His body is partially covered with vegetal rolls, alluding to the year he spent meditating standing still and during which plants grew around his legs. The trace of a tenon on the back of the head indicates that there must once have been a nimbus at this location. Jain objects from Nepal are rare because of the small number of Jain devotees in the Kathmandu Valley. Provenance : - Ancienne collection Gérard Wahl-Boyer (Paris) - Acquis de ce dernier.
