A Mughal gem-set and enamelled tray, India, 18th century, of canted rectangular form, the tray set with table-cut diamonds, white sapphires, seed pearls, turquoise and cabochon rubies, on a blue and green enamel ground, with embossed forms of flora and fauna, all raised on four foliate mask feet, 25.5cm wide, weight 1170 grams Provenance: Private English Collection the estate of Hugh Meyer Sassoon (1929-2020) According to Zebrowski and Okada, most Mughal enamelled objects were worked in the tradition of champleve enamel, an exacting task that demands great craftsmen. Please be aware this piece is set with various gems, to include: some table-cut diamond examples, some cabochon rubies, and further colourless gems, all foil-backed. Overall condition is fair. Some surface scratching and wear throughout. Some tarnishing throughout. Some minor losses to high points, nibbles to corners, piece does not sit level on a flat surface. General expectant wear commensurate with age and usage.
