公元383年8月，前秦皇帝苻坚率90万大军南下，决意荡平偏安于江南的东晋。晋孝武帝任命谢安为大将军，与侄子谢玄一起率兵拒敌，当时，晋军只有8万人马，双方实力悬殊，谢安受命之后从容调度，沉着应战，最终出奇兵，把苻坚的百万大军彻底打垮。捷报传来，谢安正与客人对弈，闻听胜利只轻轻地说了一句，“小儿辈已破敌”，虽未喜形于色，但其木屐已经被踩坏。魏晋明仕风度尽显。谢安曾居会稽（绍兴）东山，典故东山再起源于此。东山报捷即借用谢安雅号。
