此瓶器身通景所绘题材为“丙吉问牛”典故，源自《汉书·魏相丙吉传》：“丙吉为相，出郊，遇途人有殴死者，不问。遇有逐牛而喘者，问曰：牛行几里矣。或曰前后失问。吉曰：方今少阳用事，犹未太热，牛喘出舌，恐阴阳失序。三公调理阴阳，职当忧，故问之。殴死人者，自有京兆官治之，非宰相之当问也。”成语则首现于明·程登吉《幼学琼林》第四卷：“楚王轼怒蛙，以昆虫之敢死；丙吉问牛，恐阴阳之失时。”后世因此借汉代名臣丙吉见喘问牛的故事，表示关心民事，一心为国的高尚质量。
