An antique Khmer style stone Cambodian Shiva torso in the late ninth century Preah Ko style. The power emanating from this compelling Shiva image characterises Preah Ko style with sampot of the Shiva still demonstrating the earlier Kulen period style. This handsome torso is identified by the cresent moon carved in relief on the front of his jatamukuta (crown of hair) and the third eye marking his forehead. The face has eyebrows described by a continuous ridged line, a moustache, a beard, rimmed lips and wide open eyes. The inner rims of the ears are scalloped. One lobe is pierced to receive actual earrings, typical characteristics of late ninth century Khmer sculpture. His tiara or mukuta is also richly decorated. A tradition that continued to develop in Cambodia from the 9th century to the post-Angkor period. Shiva is clothed in a sampot that hangs from the waist to above the knees and is decorated with a sash that is wrapped around itself with a short pleated double pointed end in the Kulen period style. As the destroyer, Shiva is regarded as limitless, transcendent and unchanging.
