秦汉时宫殿所用砖瓦，多采用澄泥制法，后人以砖瓦改制为砚。唐吴融《古砚瓦赋》中曰：“无谓乎柔而无刚，土埏而为瓦；勿谓乎废而不用，瓦断而为砚”。此瓦当文字为“长生无极”，应为汉代瓦当。配雕瓦当纹红木砚盒。
