沈子善（1899——1969），又名六峰，祖籍江苏六合，世居南京。清光绪二十五年（1899）农历十月二十一日出生于一书香门第。曾祖与祖父有功名，做过莲幕、文官，父亲还设过塾馆。家藏经、史、于、集各类典籍与名人字画之丰厚，远近闻名。他从小耳濡目染，喜读书，爱写毛笔字。父母对他管教极严，除必读书籍背诵诗文外，每日磨墨临池要做到“日课不辕”。新中国成立后，1952年，全国高等学校院系调整，沈子善调任南京师范学校教育系教授。鉴于书法教育之振兴，考虑到他在书法上的造诣与国内外的影响，领导上请他为该院中文系、 美术系开书法课。学生中如尉天池、冯仲华毕业后均为书坛骨干，其承前启后的意义自不待言。
