George II Mahogany Drop-Leaf Table Circa 1755 The rectangular top and leaves raised on blind- fret foliate- and bell-carved square legs ending in guttae feet, on sunk casters. Height 28 inches (71.2 cm), width 19 inches (48.3 cm), extended width 56 inches (142.2 cm), depth 48 inches (121.9 cm). Provenance: Asprey, London and exhibited at The Grosvenor House Art & Antiques Fair, 1977. In 1762, Mayhew and Ince published Universal System of Household Furniture, which included a plate showing designs for card-tables, one of which is carved with variations of chinoiserie fret ornament (pl. LII). Tables featuring the similar fretwork design include a side table illustrated, G. Beard and J. Goodison, English Furniture 1500-1840, London, 1987, p. 135, fig. 5; a pair of serpentine card tables, sold Christie's, New York, 12 April 1996, lot 169; and a serpentine card table from Earl Howe's collection at Gopsall Hall, Leicestershire illustrated, M.
