East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A lovely pair of porcelain candle holders featuring floral and geometric motifs. Both are shaped with a large drip pan basin comprised of a cavity on the base leading into the hollow stem. The cylindrical stem tapers up from the center and supports a smaller drip pan. A small opening at the center leads into the stem for holding the candle or incense. Around the opening are three Buddhist swastika symbols and the rest of the surface is decorated with vines, flowers, and cloud scrolls; all delineated in a blue glaze on a white ground. A fine pair that present with auspicious symbols and may have served as altar pieces.
