East Asia, China, Qing Dynasty, ca. 19th century CE. A gorgeous, blue-glazed porcelain brush washer with the Yongzheng mark. Along the rim is an epic showdown between a finely detailed appliqued dragon and bat staring each other from opposite ends of the bowl. The dragon is curiously menacing with mouth ajar, a protruded tongue, sharp protracted claws, and a spiked spinal column. The bat has wings at attention, a pair of petite ears, and fine delineation of its furry body. The vessel has a magnificent luster to its teal exterior. Though Ming era pottery is revered by scholars and enthusiasts as China's most important ceramic era, this example is a true gem of the Qing dynasty with a more minimalist composition than customary, well-executed detailing, and a vibrant blue glaze that is a treat for the eyes.
