此佛首为唐代中期定窑黑釉佛头像面容端庄，表情宁静而略含笑意，高耸的发髻上饰有花冠，传神写实。呈现出一派富贵气象。造像以写实着称，基本是依据世俗的审美情趣的要求来塑造佛像，当时最流行的题材是观音及罗汉等。因此推断此佛头年代为唐代中、晚期。
