13th-6th century BC. A bronze axehead with tubular socket and flared blade, ribbed collar to lower edge of the socket and two opposed bird-heads above and below. 340 grams, 15cm (6"). Property of a London gentleman; acquired on the London art market in the 2000s. The axehead has never been sharpened as is so thick it can never have been intended for practical use. A ceremonial weapon for ritual or display is its most likely purpose.
