11th century AD. A bronze stirrup mount of Williams's Class A, heater-shaped with two rivet holes in the lower border and shallow ledge to the reverse; the plaque with openwork design of an advancing beast with head returned, tail passing across the rump and mouth gaping. Cf. Williams, D., Late Saxon Stirrup-Strap Mounts, York, 1997, p.68. 22.9 grams, 42mm (1 1/2"). Property of a Kent gentleman; found Ivychurch, Kent, UK, 2020; recorded with the Portable Antiquities Scheme under reference number PAS KENT-CC0E3D; accompanied by a copy of the PAS report. The example is an openwork variant of the 'advancing beast' motif. More usually the beast is shown with the head thrown back (e.g. Williams's item 286) and the body is more substantial. The present example may be a variant type within Class A.
