Translation provided by Youdao
19th century AD. A Roman style glass intaglio set in an oval mount, representing a cult scene, two male figures on the right dressed in tunic and chlamys, a central female figure of the goddess Diana at the centre upon a pedestal, and a further warrior with spear on the left, holding the reins of a horse; laurel trees in the field; set into a modern gilt ring bezel mount. See Carandini, A., Ricci, A., De Vos, A., Filosofiana, la Villa di Piazza Armerina, Palermo, 1982, for parallel scenes. 2.4 grams, 20mm (3/4"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. The scene can be variously interpreted, although it recalls the sacrifice made by hunters to Diana (Greek Artemis) represented in the mosaic of Piazza Armerina (Carandini, Ricci, De Vos, 1982, fig.93"). Like in our scene, the mosaic represents a statue of Diana upon a pedestal, framed by laurel trees. Symmetrically on either side of the scene, two young men watch the sacrifice, each holding a horse by the reins. [No Reserve] For this specific lot, 5% import VAT is applicable on the hammer price
