18th-19th century AD. A set of wrought iron shackles comprising a barrel padlock, fetter, swivel element and iron chain links. See similar example found in West Essex, catalogued HAMP-A6CDCE and see Goodall, J.H., Ironwork in Medieval Britain, an archaeological study, New York, 2011. 1.3 kg, 68cm (26 3/4"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. This type of barrel padlock seems of Goodall's Type D, with L-shaped arms, intended to secure human or animal limbs. Comparable examples on the database PAS have been attributed Medieval (WILT-5C4A59) and Post Medieval (LON-CC4478) dates, some as recent as the 18th-19th century (CAM-92EDE2"). The overall combination of the elements in our specimen suggests these are shackles intended for use on human prisoners.
