Hallmarked Chester 1911 AD. An oval gold swivel fob with carved carnelian stone intaglio with one side depicting a profile incuse bust of a helmetted and plumed Roman emperor wearing body armour and holding a circular shield; the gold frame hallmarked for Chester with date letter script 'L' for 1911, the suspender in the form of a knotted doubled loop with additional small suspension loop and ring. 7.09 grams, 35mm overall (1 1/4"). From the collection of an Essex jeweller. The appearance of the portrait is very reminiscent of that of Emperor Constantine I (Constantine the Great, 306-337 AD), depicted on some of his coins; the emperor is often shown, as here, facing to the left or right, wearing a plumed helmet and carrying a shield and, as considered to be the first Christian emperor, the carver may have intended this intaglio to celebrate him. An image of a gold aureus coin of Constantine I is included with this lot, for comparison. Fobs such as this example often show such a classical image, sometimes combined with a personal design to the other side and were frequently used as seals.
