18th century AD. A silver-gilt pendant wheel-headed Orthodox cross with transverse angled lower ledge; raised text to the obverse, with the monogram of Jesus Christ in Greek (IC =?????? and X = ???????) at the side of the cross arms, geometric designs to the reverse. See De Gruyter, Comite International d’Histoire de l’Art (Ed.) et al. Band 2: Liturgische Gerate, Kreuze und Reliquiare der Christlichen Kirchen/Objets Liturgiques, croix et reliquaires des Eglises Chretiennes, London-Paris, 1982. 7.9 grams, 42mm (1 1/2"). Property of an Essex gentleman; acquired on the UK art market; previously in a UK collection since the 1980s. The Orthodox cross consists of a vertical line with three cross bars. The horizontal bar at the top represents the plaque with the Titulum (INRI"). The transverse line at the bottom represents the footrest and in the Russian Orthodox tradition it is represented diagonally: usually the upper part is the one to the left of the observer.
