1st-2nd century AD. A mixed group of two inscribed plaques comprising: one half of a tabula ansata-shaped plaque with partial inscription in repoussé which reads: 'AEVIVS / TVS.SODA / VS.D.D' in three lines; a bifacial heart-shaped military plaque, stamped 'I.R.B.P.Q.D' on one face, possibly the initials of the owner and his unit; a possible interpretation is: B (rittonum) P (ublius) Q (uintus) D (ecius), and partial remains of inscription composed of a series of dots which reads 'IPER D V' in two lines on the other. See similar remains of tabulae ansatae with inscriptions in Stiebel, G., Stiebel, G.D., Armis et litteris, the military equipment of early Roman Palestine, in light of archaeological and historical sources, London, 2007, pl.III.3.Y and III.3.Z. 13.4 grams total, 40-47mm (1 1/2 - 2"). Property of a gentleman from Vienna; from his private collection formed since 1970. Numerous inscriptions on arms, with the formula of the owner’s name and unit, some in the shape of tabula ansata, executed in an unskilled way, were used to serve as an ownership tags, among the soldiers themselves, so that a soldier would not take someone else’s weapon. This practice surely prevented stealing or other serious misunderstanding. In this case two names are incised on the tabula, probably the owners of the weapon or object to which the tabula was fastened: a certain Aevius and a possible (Aureli)us Soda (a Germanic name deriving from Suo, South"). The gaps of the third line makes it impossible to understand the meaning. The small silver leaf, probably a cult object, report the initials of a name (IPERION?) and D could be interpreted as the DECURIA of belonging, but this is highly speculative.
