R. F. McGraw (American, 1880-1970) Dunes, 1951 Gelatin silver print 7-3/4 x 9-3/4 inches (19.7 x 24.8 cm) (image/sheet) Signed and dated in pencil, mount verso. PROVENANCE: The artist; Dody Weston Thompson; Current owner. Richard F. McGraw was born into a photographic family and was active in photography from the late 1930s until the late 1970s. He worked in color (carbros and Cibachromes) and black and white. His father Max owned the McGraw Colorgraph Company, which put together one-shot color cameras and made carbro supplies, and the younger McGraw worked at the company. His father had a number of Edward Weston photographs and apparently knew Weston in the 1920s. He gifted several of the photographs to the Art Institute of Chicago. His son also knew and was a student of Ansel Adams and Edward Weston. He attended the Art Center School in 1941, and Adams said he had met the young McGraw there. He met Weston when Adams took a group of his students over to meet Weston. McGraw's work is in the the Ansel and Virginia Adams Collection of the Center for Creative Photography.
