A PAIR OF CARVED GILTWOOD WALL MIRRORS IN GEORGE III STYLE, IN THE MANNER OF THOMAS JOHNSON, LATE 18TH/EARLY 19TH CENTURY Each shaped rectangular plate within a scroll carved frame flanked on each side by meandering trees, the pagoda crests centred by a seated male Chinoiserie figure each 117cm high, 83cm wide Provenance: Formerly from the estate of Philippa Bradstock of Longbottom House, Biddesden. Condition Report: Marks, scratches and abrasions commensurate with age and use. The frames both appear sympathetically restored and cleaned previously. some old repairs apparent from reverse. Some later fillets of timber applied to the reverse to secure old repaired breaks. (see images) section of later/ modern timber replaces a section of one of the panels to the reverse of one mirror plate Some refreshed gilding sympathetically applied. One mirror has a modern mirror plate, the other is a mercury plate and bears significant depletion (see images) One mirror frame has previously been broken in several places and professionally restored whereby it is very difficult to tell which mirror has been repaired. Areas of the mirror frame were sympathetically re-gilded when repaired. The other mirror has some old repairs. To both mirrors the repairs are largely difficult to detect from the gilded side due to restoration. The rear panel to each mirror plate is likely later associated and do vary slightly from each other. There is evidence of previous glue to the outer edges of the boards from previous attachment of paper etc. One panel has a later section of replaced/ added timber to the lower edge (see image) The carving of the chinoiserie figure and the goat to each frame are quite naïve/ crude but overall the pair of mirrors are aesthetically very pleasing.
