ATTRIBUTED TO THE WORKSHOP OF MICHELANGELO MAESTRI (ITALIAN D. 1812), A PAIR OF GRAND TOUR GOUACHES CIRCA 1800 Depicting "Bacchante fending off amorous advances" and "A female nude feeding a mythological creature (tiger/fish cross), gouache on paper the images 22 x 23cm, framed and glazed 35.5 x 36cm overall Michelangelo Maestri was a late 18th century Italian artist of whose work drew on compositions in the city around him, as well as from antique frescoes discovered in Pompeii and Herculaneum. Such works by Maestri became very popular and were often purchased by European travellers during their 'Grand Tour'.
