A PAIR OF GEORGE III COADE STONE VASES DATED 1791 Each with cone finial above tapering bodies with lion mask mounts holding trailing bellflower, pedestal foot and square plinth base, both impressed "COADE LONDON 1791" each approximately 80cm high, 58cm diameter overall Provenance: Acquired 25 years ago as part of the purchase of a Grade II listed property in Buckinghamshire when these vases were subsequently discovered in a herbaceous border. Subsequently cleaned and restored by Thomason of Cudworth in 2010 This design is illustrated as No. 88 in Coade's 1784 'Descriptive Catalogue of Coade's Artificial Stone Manufactory', Section II VASES- 'A Vase with Lions' Heads- Much Enriched' £2 12s 6d. This particular design is rarely seen at auction- design No. 89 is more commonly seen. The latter has the same basic body shape, finial and cover but with a plainer floral banding and more austere drapery- rather than the lion masks and ebullient pastoral bellflower swags seen here.
