Song/Jin dynasties, 11th/12th centuryThe first of reddish buff stoneware body, covered on the interior with a variegated light brown glaze with two phoenix in flight over a central plum blossom; the second with a pale blue cast ground setting of tow phoenix alternating with discrete blossoms, the exterior with a 'tortoise shell' glaze; the third a small 'oil spot' glazed tea bowl; the fourth a Jizhou 'tortoiseshell' glazed bowl; the fifth a Jizhou brown glazed bowl. the interior with a pair of resist-decorated phoenixes separated by two plum flower-heads, all on speckled brown ground. 6in (15.4cm) diameter of largest (5).
