He initially studied engineering in Turin before becoming a jeweller. In 1960, he founded the Mila Sch?n label with Mila Carmen Nutrizio Sch?n (1916-2008), achieving critical and financial success. In 1978, he established the company, Schontess, producing fabric, ties, and scarves. Abate was President of the Camera della Moda (Chamber of Fashion) from 1985-1991, during which time he transformed the steps of Trinità dei Monti in Rome into an Italian fashion runway for worldwide evening telecasts. During the same period, he devoted himself to his own eponymous ready-to-wear brand, while continuing to create his own line of jewellery.
