PAIR OF LARGE LATE 19TH CENTURY FRENCH EMILE GALLÉ GILT AND ENAEMLLED GLASS MOSQUE LAMPS circa 1890, formed of bowls with three scrolling fluted handles and three fluted rims, the bases with a secondary layer with a fluted rim descending into a pontil drop decorated with a fluted outer edge, the bodies decorated in gilt and enamel with branches with cherry blossom and flowing lengths of fabric with repeating patterns, the bases with incised signature 'E Gallé', each strung with three lengths of gold, pink and cream cord, each 22cm high, 25cm in diameter (2) Inspiration from Islamic arts is pervasive in Emile Gallé’s glass work but is however more unusual in his lamps. The examples of mosque lamps are indeed rare and indicate the artist’s greater freedom of adaptation.
