Robert Newell (American, 1822-1897) Steam Locomotive No. 9, Built for Havana Bay & Matanzas, 1862 Salt print from wet plate negative 6 x 9-1/4 inches (15.2 x 23.5 cm) (image) Robert Newell was a prominent commercial photographer, operating in and around Philadelphia from 1855 to his death in 1897. Originally specializing in portraiture, he later focused on "artistic business and landscape photographs." Newell recorded important events in Philadelphia, such as the 1864 Great Central Fair for the U.S. Sanitary Commission, and records of the impact of the American Civil War on the Pennsylvania community.
