Vérin Frères (French, 19th Century) Shipbuilding in La Rochelle, 1853 Calotype negative 5-1/8 x 6-5/8 inches (13.0 x 16.8 cm) (image) Inscribed and dated in ink in the image. The Vérin brother, comprised of Pierre-Amédée, Pierre-Adolphe, and Eugène-Napoléon, studied art and printmaking in Paris. They became recognized for the gravures after paintings, which were published through Goupil. Little is known about their photographic career, which is thought to have begun around 1845. Primarily producing calotype negatives and salted paper prints, they also published an album of 104 view of France titled Tours à Bordeaux in 1854.
