George K. Warren (American, 1824-1884) Theodore Ferris (Candy Sam) with Tin Lock Box and Basket, 1863 Salt print from collodion negative 5 x 3 inches (12.7 x 7.6 cm); oval (image) This image comes from a Yale University, Class of 1863 album. Theodore Ferris was a blind candy seller, well known on Yale's campus during the second half of the 19th century. His basket typically held apples, while his offering of confections were carried in the flat box. While the presence of African-American staff at east coast American universities is well documented, there is no figure more visible in the photographic record than Ferris: his likeness appeared in select class albums over a span of nearly 30 years.
