An oak punishment cell pillow, approx. l76cm x w30cm x d15cm. The heavy piece of oak is carved with names and initials of inmates. Note: Victorian and Edwardian jails were harsh places cold, damp with little to no comfort and often days filled with punishing labour. Florence Sprong a Suffragette describes her punishment cell in the book The Suffragette; "There I discovered a plank bed fixed in one corner of the cell about 4" from the ground, with a wooden pillow for the head and a wooden seat, and in another corner was a small shelf with a filthy rubber tumbler full of water"....
