Duane Michals (American, 1932) The Captive Child, 1976 Gelatin silver print 4-3/4 x 7 inches (12.1 x 17.8 cm) (image) 8 x 10 inches (sheet) Photographer's stamp, verso. Inscribed with text by the artist in ink, upper and lower margins, recto. EXHIBITED: G. Ray Hawkins Gallery, Los Angeles, California, "Duane Michals," 1977. Text surrounding the image reads: "The man seized the sleeping child and took him captive. But the boy was not frightened. His innocence kept him free. Because he possessed nothing, nothing could be taken from him. Being without desire, he did not want. And since he knew nothing of death, he was not frightened by it. The man recognized in the boy all that he had once been. A sweet affection grew between them. And when at last they freed the boy and took the man away, the child experienced a loss. For the first time he was lonely. Then the boy became a captive." HID03101062020 © 2020 Heritage Auctions | All Rights Reserved
