Arthur F. Gay (American, Early 20th Century) Group of 12 Photographs of Bodybuilders, 1920s-1930s Gelatin silver prints, printed 1980 11-1/2 x 8 inches (29.2 x 20.3 cm); and smaller, and the reverse (images/sheets) Each with Lehr/Link Bodybuilders stamp, and numbered in ink from an unrealized edition of 300, verso. Property from the Estate of Lewis Lehr Arthur F. Gay was born in Rochester, New York in 1895. In 1917 he won first prize in a Physical Culture competition out of a field of over 500. During World War I he was crowned the strongest man in the U.S. Navy. In the 1920s he opened a Physical Culture studio in Rochester where he taught bodybuilding and weight loss. Gay photographed his students, and when Lewis Lehr discovered the negatives in 1980 he published an edition of the prints.
