A VERY RARE BAMBOO NETSUKE OF A RECLINING TIGER Unsigned Japan, late 18th to early 19th century, Edo period (1615-1868) The tiger's body forming a compact composition as it rests its head on the front paws in an alert position, ready to pounce at any moment. The thick tail curls up over the body and the eyes are inlaid in mother-of-pearl. This rare netsuke is carved from a choice section of bamboo, the characteristic stippled markings masterfully emulating the tiger's fur coat. Large, asymmetrical, and generously excavated himotoshi underneath. LENGTh 4.5 cm Condition: Superb condition with only minor wear and natural 'flaws' to the material. Provenance: The Gabor Wilhelm Collection, Paris. Auction comparison: A related bamboo netsuke of a tiger by Sekiran was recently sold by Tessier & Sarrou, 14 June 2021, Paris, lot 29 (sold for 17,920 EUR).
