麒麟是吉祥神宠，主太平、长寿。古人认为，麒麟出没处，必有祥瑞。有时用来比喻才能杰出、德才兼备的人。亦与青龙、白虎、朱雀、玄武并称五大祥兽。东汉许慎《说文解字》中描述：“麒，仁宠也，麋身龙尾一角；麐（麟），牝麒也。”段玉裁注：“状如麕，一角，戴肉，设武备而不为害，所以为仁也。”《礼记》礼运中云：“出土器车，河出马图，凤凰麒麟，皆在郊棷。”可见麒麟在古人信仰中的崇高地位。此件香熏为铜铸麒麟之形，色古而凝重。头呈龙形，双目圆睁，头上生角，耳尖上翘，头颈处鬃毛飞舞上冲。身型健硕，筋骨强健，肌肉饱满，四肢关节处有火焰形装饰，狮尾前卷，四爪如钩踞地有力。兽体中空，背上有一盖，其内可焚香，试想当年每当香料点燃，麒麟口中生出香气一缕，使人心无旁骛，尽脱凡俗之气。香烟缭绕之中，为文房增添了一层祥和浮华的色彩。
